What Is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy is a collaborative form of therapy that helps people explore the stories they tell themselves about their life, relationships, and challenges. These stories often shape how we view ourselves, our abilities, our beliefs, and the world around us. Over time, experiences with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, grief, or abuse can lead to developing narratives that no longer serve us and may hold us back from living the life we want.

In Narrative Therapy, individuals learn how to redefine these narratives, separate themselves from their problems, and begin building their own preferred stories rooted in strengths, values, and hope.

How Narrative Therapy Works

Narrative Therapy views problems as external to the person. Through meaningful conversations, clients explore how certain stories developed, what shaped them, and how they influence current patterns. Narrative ideas emphasize curiosity, respect, and collaboration.

Narrative therapists work alongside clients to examine the dominant storylines we carry, challenge limiting beliefs, and highlight and build on the adaptive skills and resilience that we already possess. This approach helps clients build self-awareness and understanding, and create more empowering ways of being.

Key Principles Of Narrative Therapy

  • Externalizing the problem: Instead of saying “I am anxious,” we explore how “anxiety is showing up in my life.” We learn to not identify with and define ourselves by the issues that we might be struggling with in our lives.

  • Highlighting strengths and skills: Clients reconnect with abilities they may have lost touch with, helping rebuild confidence and self-esteem.

  • Exploring preferred stories: People can choose and practice new, healthier narratives that feel in line with their values, goals, and identity.

  • Respect, collaboration, and consent: Narrative Therapy aligns with social justice models, honouring people’s dignity and the cultural and societal context we were raised in and currently exist in.

  • Integrating different therapeutic models: While rooted in Narrative Therapy theory, therapists typically integrate other therapeutic models, such as conflict resolution, emotional regulation, or building communication skills, when helpful.

Who Can Benefit From This Approach?

Narrative Therapy frameworks are useful for individuals of all ages, adults, couples, and family systems. Therapists may integrate a narrative approach when working with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, body image concerns, anger management, parenting skills, relationships, divorce, and grief.

It can also assist individuals impacted by domestic violence, abuse, or suicide ideation, which can shatter one’s sense of identity and sense of self. This approach supports a therapy experience where people feel heard, understood, and supported. People who value choice, empowerment, and a collaborative style of counselling often value Narrative Therapy approaches.

Conditions And Concerns Narrative Therapy Helps With

Narrative Therapy supports a wide range of concerns. Below are key areas where our Winnipeg Narrative Therapy team provides individual therapy and family therapy:

Anxiety & Overwhelming Thoughts

Narrative Therapy techniques can help us to see how we are not defined by anxiety, but rather understand its influence in our lives and reclaim a sense of agency. Your therapist in Winnipeg will help you explore patterns, triggers, and the stories that fuel fear and worry. Through this process, you may strengthen coping skills and build calmer, more grounded narratives.

Depression & Negative Self-Narratives

Narrative Therapy offers a compassionate way to explore the beliefs that accompany depression. Instead of seeing the problem as part of your identity, your therapist will help you unpack how negative self-narratives came to be and how you can change them to develop a healthier relationship to yourself and those around you. Reconnecting with forgotten strengths and supportive relationships is part of recovery from depression.

Trauma & Difficult Life Events

For those impacted by trauma, domestic violence, abuse, or unexpected losses, narrative approaches honour the person's survival story and promote healing without re-traumatization. This approach helps individuals reclaim authorship of their lives, cultivate safety, and strengthen resilience.

Relationship Issues & Communication Patterns

Couples and family members experiencing conflict or emotional distance can benefit from narrative-based couples therapy and relationship counselling. By exploring communication patterns, unmet needs, and shared stories, partners learn healthier ways of dealing with conflict, develop conflict resolution strategies, and practice ways of connecting and reconnecting.

Self-Esteem & Identity Challenges

Narrative Therapy invites people to explore the stories shaping their identity, including messages from family, culture, or past experiences. Negative stories about ourselves and our bodies can lead to problems with self-esteem, body image, and identity. Through the therapeutic process, we can develop preferred stories about the self that support a healthier, more balanced way of being.

What To Expect During Narrative Therapy Sessions

During sessions, your counsellor or social worker will create space for genuine conversation. You may be invited to explore the history of a problem, its influence on your life, and times when you resisted or overcame it.

Sessions may also involve:

  • Identifying your preferred stories

  • Discussing values, intentions, and hopes

  • Highlighting forgotten skills and abilities

  • Exploring relationships and support systems

  • Building new narratives that help you move forward with your goals
